The story:

After a century of mining, Peregrine is tired. His wings are weak and his hearing is too muddy to trust. He relies on the aid of ferrin he raises like his own children. But as a korvi with a two hundred year lifespan, Peregrine has buried four of his faithful friends — and he will outlive dear Tillian as well. Tired of his self-made fate, convinced that he is robbing Tillian of her short life, Peregrine resolves to stop mining and take up the messenger trade. He promises himself that he'll set his earferrin free.

The same day Peregrine takes wing for a messenger job, Rose faces an epidemic. Dozens of her aemet villagers are showing symptoms of the demon plague gripthia — and without enough healing magic, they will die. Young and recently hurried into her leadership position, Rose can't yet live up to her family's mage legacy: she can't save her village alone. She sends out an urgent plea for korvi and ferrin help.

As soon as they hear of Rose's plight, Peregrine and Tillian volunteer themselves as aides. But gripthia has made time precious, and they can't afford the luxury of each other's company. Peregrine pushes his atrophied wings to run delivery flights, while worrying that he has lost his guide too soon. Tillian takes a crash course in nursing the critically ill, while worrying that she has been abandoned by her mentor and best friend. And as Rose works herself to exhaustion, casting all the support magic she knows, she prays that her village won't cease to be.

The story: Aster Hane has all the things her aemet people cherish: a hard-working husband, new children, and a talent for her family's traditional craftwork. What Aster doesn't have is what she senses in the wind: knowledge of the world beyond her small village.

Then she meets Llarez of Arkiere, a korvi storyteller. With his jester's approach to life, Llarez doesn't mind doing an errand for Aster — and he doesn't mind when Aster accidentally asks for more than she intended. With new thoughts planted in her mind, Aster begins to question whether her race's ideal life is what she actually wants for herself. Llarez is glad to help her find the answer, but that only makes the choice harder.

In Progress:

Render, a story of Aligare

Menaced by strangely bold wolves and paralyzed by fear, a mountain aemet village is slowly starving to death. Their best defense against the wolves is guard dogs -- who must be fed on meat the villagers don't have. What can Rue do to save her home, when her only distinction is being named after a lucky plant? She could badger the lone hunter Felixi for help, because his wings are strong and his claws are able — but Felixi knows far more about the village's troubles than he's willing to share.
